Norway bans AI tools in primary schools to boost reading and writing

The Norwegian government announced that generative artificial intelligence tools will be prohibited for students aged 6 to 13 in primary schools, effective from the new school year starting in August. The policy aims to strengthen basic literacy and numeracy skills by encouraging traditional reading, writing, and calculation, with officials saying excessive AI use hampers concentration and cognitive development.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized that the measure is intended to restore fundamental learning foundations. Students aged 14‑16 will be allowed limited AI access under strict teacher supervision, while those aged 17‑19 will receive structured instruction on appropriate AI usage for further education and employment. The decision reflects broader Nordic discussions about balancing digital tools with paper‑based learning.
