Norway bans AI tools for primary‑school students

Norway’s government announced that, from the start of the 2026 school year, pupils aged 6 to 13 will be prohibited from using generative‑AI tools such as ChatGPT in class or for routine homework. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the move is meant to preserve basic learning skills, stating, “Lo más importante en la escuela es que nuestros hijos aprendan a leer, escribir y hacer matemáticas.”

The policy introduces a tiered approach: primary‑school children face a total ban; secondary‑school students (14‑16) may use AI only under teacher supervision; older students (17‑19) will be taught to use AI responsibly. The restriction is part of a broader digital‑use crackdown that previously banned smartphones in classrooms and will increase funding for physical textbooks. Norway aims to curb dependence on screens and restore traditional learning environments.

The decision follows concerns over declining test scores and a perceived erosion of reading, writing and problem‑solving abilities among younger learners.
