Norway to Ban AI Use in Primary Schools

Norway’s government, led by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, announced a near‑ban on generative artificial‑intelligence tools for pupils aged 6‑13 in elementary schools. The rule will take effect with the new school year that starts in late August. Students aged 14‑16 may use AI only under direct teacher supervision, while those aged 17‑19 will receive instruction on appropriate use to prepare for further education and work.

The measure follows a sharp decline in national test scores and builds on a 2024 ban on smartphones in schools. Støre said, “The most important thing in school is that our children learn to read, write and do mathematics.” The government also plans legislation to fund greater use of printed textbooks and has earlier proposed a ban on social‑media access for children under 16.

The policy reflects growing concerns worldwide that early exposure to AI could cause students to skip fundamental learning steps, prompting other nations to consider similar restrictions.
