Norway Begins Canonization Process for Nobel Laureate Sigrid Undset

Oslo Bishop Fredrik Hansen announced on 8 July that Norway is commencing preparations for a canonization cause for Sigrid Undset, the 1928 Nobel Prize‑winning novelist. Undset, born in Denmark in 1882 and raised in Oslo, converted to Catholicism in 1924, a move that drew public criticism in the country’s largely Lutheran society. Her literary fame stems from the medieval trilogy “Kristin Lavransdatter,” which earned her the Nobel Prize for its vivid portrayal of Northern life. Hansen said Undset’s life exemplifies deep faith, defense of human dignity and heroic virtue, meeting the criteria for sainthood.

The preparation for the cause marks the first formal step toward possibly canonizing the celebrated author within the Catholic Church.
