Norway begins Kjøllefjord port expansion and Kåfjord landslide monitoring

In Norway, significant infrastructure and safety projects are underway in the Troms region. Kystverket and NCC Norge AS have commenced the expansion of the Kjøllefjord fishing port. The project aims to improve safety and functionality by constructing two new breakwaters in the outer harbor and deepening the inner harbor to better protect the fishing fleet from northwest winds and accommodate larger vessels.

Simultaneously, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has begun drilling two 150-meter-deep boreholes into the Indre Nordnes mountain section in Kåfjord. This area is considered one of the country’s most landslide-prone mountains. The drilling is intended to provide data on rock types, fractures, and internal movements to better understand the risk of a landslide that could potentially trigger tsunamis in the Lyngenfjord. NVE officials stated that while movements have increased in recent years, there is no acute change in the current situation.
