Norway boat thefts: Fewer incidents but higher values stolen

Data from Finans Norge indicates that while the total number of recreational boat thefts in Norway decreased by nearly 18 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, the financial impact remains high. Total estimated insurance payouts for boat-related thefts reached 52.4 million NOK, representing only an 8 percent decrease from the same period in 2025.

This trend suggests that thieves are targeting more valuable objects. The average insurance payout per theft has risen from approximately 80,000 NOK to over 90,000 NOK in just one year. Kjetil Skaare, managing director of Securmark, noted that while the number of cases is falling, the value of stolen goods remains at a high level.

Security experts are warning boat owners to increase precautions as the autumn season approaches. With less activity in harbors and more boats left unattended, autumn and spring are historically peak periods for boat and motor thefts. Securmark recommends storing boats on land when not in use, using FG-approved locks, and ensuring boats are placed in well-lit areas with regular supervision.
