Norway braces for possible new temperature record as heat wave peaks

Meteorologists from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute warn that a high‑pressure system and warm southerly air could push temperatures in parts of southern Norway to as high as 36 °C on Wednesday. Locations such as Nesbyen in Buskerud, the Dalen valley in Telemark and several villages in Hallingdal are forecast to approach or exceed the current national record of 35.6 °C set in Nesbyen in 1970.

The institute stresses that an official record requires measurement at an approved weather station and that margins such as cloud cover and wind can affect the final maximum. While a new record is possible, forecasters note a cloud layer may limit temperatures to around 35 °C. The heat wave, defined as five consecutive days with highs above 27 °C, has already triggered warnings about dehydration, heat‑related illness and increased forest‑fire risk, with authorities urging the public to stay hydrated and avoid open flames.

In Nesbyen, the potential record is a point of local pride, with the tourist office selling merchandise branded with the 35.6 °C figure. Residents hope the record will stand, but the weather remains uncertain.
