Norway budget debates focus on wealth management and tax policy

Norway's national budget discussions highlight the country's significant wealth, with the Government Pension Fund Global (Oljefondet) valued at over four times the nation's GDP. Recent data indicates that approximately 1,054,134 Norwegians, or one-fifth of the population, are millionaires.

While the government has proposed tax reductions, including a 0.2 percentage point cut to the social security contribution on wage income, critics argue the impact is minimal for many households. For a family earning 1.2 million NOK, the reduction amounts to roughly 2,400 NOK annually. Furthermore, pensioners remain unaffected by this specific cut, as their rate stays at 5.1 percent.

Political opposition, specifically from the Progress Party (Frp), has criticized the government's priorities. They argue that while income taxes may see slight decreases, other costs such as climate taxes and reduced electric vehicle benefits are increasing. The government has proposed using 608.4 billion NOK from the oil fund in 2027, prompting debates over whether the state should prioritize core tasks and economic freedom over expanding public spending and bureaucracy.
