Norway budget faces criticism over municipal preparedness and northern growth

NITO, the Norwegian organization for engineers and technologists, has criticized the government's budget proposal, arguing it fails to adequately address the increasing preparedness needs of municipalities. NITO President Kjetil Lein stated that while the government proposes a 3.2 billion NOK increase in free income for the municipal sector, much of this is offset by demographic costs, leaving only 0.5 billion NOK in actual maneuverability. Lein emphasized that municipalities manage critical infrastructure essential for handling extreme weather and crises, but current funding levels may force delays in vital investments.

In Northern Norway, specifically Troms and Finnmark, the budget focuses heavily on defense. The government has allocated 1.8 billion NOK for property and construction investments, alongside 9 billion NOK for material investments in Brigade Nord and the Finnmark Brigade. While these defense allocations are seen as positive for national security, there are calls for clearer political directives to ensure local businesses in the north can participate in the defense supply chain and benefit from these large-scale investments.
