Norway considers new taxes on low-value imports from Temu and Shein
Norway is facing increasing pressure to regulate the massive influx of low-cost goods from e-commerce platforms like Temu and Shein. Data from the Norwegian Customs service indicates that over 50 million items from these platforms arrived in Norway within a single year, averaging approximately 150,000 items per day.
The organization Framtiden i våre hender is calling on the Norwegian government to introduce a tax on small packages for the 2027 national budget, mirroring a temporary three-euro customs duty on low-value goods (up to 150 euros) recently implemented by the EU. The Norwegian government has tasked the Ministry of Finance with investigating potential measures, including customs duties and control fees, to prevent Norway from becoming a more attractive market for these platforms compared to the EU.
In a separate development related to these platforms, the Danish brand Design by Si has faced social media allegations of dropshipping. Critics claim the brand sells products identical to those found on Temu and Shein. Design by Si has categorically denied these claims, asserting that they are the victims of intellectual property theft and that platforms like Temu are copying their designs.
