Norway constructing world's longest underwater road tunnel

Norway is constructing the Rogfast tunnel, which is set to become the world’s longest and deepest underwater road tunnel. Located beneath the North Sea, the project aims to significantly reduce travel times between the cities of Stavanger and Bergen by providing a continuous route along the E39 highway.

The tunnel will span 26.7 kilometers and reach depths of approximately 390 meters below sea level. At its deepest points, the structure will be separated from the seabed by a rock layer only about 50 meters thick, enduring immense water pressure. The design includes four lanes and two traffic roundabouts, and it will also provide a land connection to the Kvitsøy island group.

Construction began in 2018, and the project is expected to be completed and opened by 2033. The estimated cost of the infrastructure project is approximately 2 billion euros. Once operational, the tunnel will allow for the removal of existing ferry services across the Boknafjord.
