Norway Cup 2026 posts modest surplus after deficit, referee unrest persists

The 2026 Norway Cup, one of the world’s largest youth football tournaments, concluded on Oslo’s Ekebergsletta with 1,950 teams, about 30,000 players from 25 nations, 450 referees and 2,300 volunteers. After a 2025 deficit of NOK 813,199, the event reported a small surplus for 2026, helped by higher sponsor income that rose to roughly NOK 15 million and total revenues estimated at about NOK 65 million.

Referees voiced strong dissatisfaction with the tournament’s logistics. Referee Henrik Brækhus said officials felt “ignored” and complained about inadequate water, food and shower facilities, and described a disrespectful exchange with tournament director Tone Lien during the closing ceremony. Belgian referee‑exchange representative Jakub Stefanski echoed concerns, noting cuts to support services. Despite the financial turnaround, the unrest highlights ongoing challenges in meeting volunteer and official needs at the event.
