Norway data center projects face scrutiny over energy use
Data center developments in Norway are facing scrutiny regarding energy consumption, grid capacity, and local economic benefits. In Sirdal, GreenScale proposes a facility at Tonstad with a power demand of up to 300 MW, equivalent to the consumption of several hundred thousand households. Critics have raised concerns regarding the company’s lack of documented experience operating existing data centers and its failure to provide specific details on job creation and local investment.
In Ørsta, the Lefdal Mine Data Center is planned with a capacity of 100 to 150 MW. Discussions in the region focus on whether the massive energy requirements will strain the local power grid and limit capacity for other businesses. There are concerns that the primary cost to the municipality may be the loss of future investment opportunities and regional resources, such as skilled labor and administrative capacity, if grid bottlenecks occur.
