Norway: Debates emerge over whistleblowing and fraud reporting
Legal experts and industry representatives in Norway are addressing the evolving nature of whistleblowing and reporting mechanisms in both the workplace and digital finance sectors.
In the labor market, lawyers Aleksander Rød and Kjetil Baustad Egelie express concern that critical workplace issues—such as staffing and organizational management—are increasingly being channeled into individual whistleblowing tracks rather than through traditional collective cooperation between management and union representatives. They argue this shift may weaken the Norwegian labor model by sidelining union officials and safety representatives.
In the digital sector, Vipps is responding to criticisms regarding how fraud reports are handled. While some users express frustration that reports of fraudulent activity do not seem to result in visible consequences, Vipps clarifies that privacy laws prevent them from disclosing specific actions taken against other users. The company noted that its AI model, Olga, has helped prevent approximately 300 million NOK in fraud since 2024 by analyzing peer-to-peer payments in real time.
