Norway debates freedom of speech amid rising political online harassment

A debate is intensifying in Norway regarding freedom of speech and the regulation of online hate speech following recent threats against political figures. The discussion was triggered by unacceptable comments and threats directed at outgoing AUF leader Gaute Skjervø, which police reportedly dismissed as non-criminal.

Politician Seher Aydar (Rødt) has shared her experience of closing social media comment sections to those not on her friend list to mitigate massive harassment. Aydar noted that the abuse, often targeting her gender and ethnic background, drained her energy and impacted her ability to work. She expressed concern for the young people following her who are exposed to such content.

While some advocates call for stricter laws and the closing of comment sections to curb hate speech, others argue that such measures could undermine democratic principles and the constitutional right to free expression.
