Norway debates online comment sections following threats against AUF leader

Debate has intensified in Norway regarding the management of online comment sections following death threats directed at AUF leader Gaute Skjervø. The discussion highlights the tension between curbing hateful rhetoric and protecting freedom of expression.

During an NRK Debatten season opening, a presenter performed a monologue containing violent threats, subsequently stating that such remarks are legal. This led to criticism from Document editor Hans Rustad, who argued that the types of threats Skjervø has received should be punishable. While some suggest using Artificial Intelligence to filter non-factual vitriol, others warn that such measures could lead to censorship or the loss of democratic discourse, especially since the majority of online harassment occurs on social media platforms outside the control of traditional editors.
