Norway debates strategies to combat online hate and harassment
At the Spekter Conference, discussions focused on the impact of online trolling and hate speech on democratic processes. Ken André Ottesen warned that a small minority of bad actors can disrupt public debate, potentially causing individuals to withdraw from political roles and threatening the liberal democratic model.
Norway’s Minister of Culture and Equality, Lubna Jaffery, responded by stating that the government is developing a comprehensive strategy to combat these issues. She noted that existing strategies target antisemitism, Islamophobia, and homophobia, with a new strategy for people with disabilities currently in development.
Separately, legal expert Anine Kierulf has sparked debate regarding freedom of expression and the climate of public discourse. Her analysis of media rulings has led to discussions about how influential figures discuss political opponents and the consequences of such commentary on the overall speech climate.
