Norway deploys NASAMS sensors and troops to Russian border

Norway is strengthening its military presence in the Finnmark region near the Russian border. The Norwegian Ministry of Defence announced the deployment of NASAMS air defence sensors in Kirkenes to improve airspace surveillance and enable the early detection of stray drones.

To support this operation, more than 30 soldiers will be stationed with the Sør-Varanger garrison until the end of the year. Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik stated that these are proactive measures intended to increase situational awareness, noting that experiences from the conflict in Ukraine highlight the importance of early warning systems.

While authorities noted that there is currently no increased air threat to the region or its population, they are preparing for scenarios where drones might drift into Norwegian territory due to GPS interference. The deployment involves coordination between the military and local police to manage airspace restrictions and ensure public safety.
