Professor Molchanov seized by Norway in Svalbard
Norwegian authorities have seized the Russian research and cruise vessel Professor Molchanov in the port of Barentsburg, located in the Svalbard archipelago. The seizure was ordered by a Norwegian district court following a request from the Ukrainian state energy company Naftogaz. Naftogaz is seeking to enforce a $4.22 billion arbitration award against Russia for assets seized during the 2014 annexation of Crimea.
The vessel, which is 71 meters long and capable of carrying 52 passengers and 32 crew members, remains detained. The seizure has left passengers and crew stranded, prompting the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to state it is doing everything possible to protect Russian citizens and uphold its international obligations. Norway noted that Russian companies in the region regularly receive exemptions from sanctions to ensure the delivery of essential goods like food to the isolated settlements.
Russia has reacted strongly, with officials characterizing the move as 'piracy', 'state terrorism', and 'legal nihilism'. Moscow has summoned the Norwegian ambassador to protest and has announced plans to appeal the decision. The incident has raised significant geopolitical tensions regarding the legal status of the Svalbard archipelago and the application of international law in the Arctic region.
