Norway education crisis prompts calls for reform and state funding

Norway is facing a crisis in its education system following PISA results that show significant declines in basic skills. Data indicates that 40 percent of 15-year-old boys struggle with reading, and nearly 40 percent of students fall below the minimum threshold in mathematics.

Ine Eriksen Søreide, leader of the Conservative Party (Høyre), has proposed three major interventions to address the decline: a reading reform emphasizing physical books and intensive early instruction, a boost in STEM subjects through updated teacher training, and a major investment in teachers and school leaders to reduce bureaucracy. While criticizing the current government's handling of the situation, Søreide acknowledged that her party also shares responsibility for previous educational policies.

Separately, the Norwegian School Federation (Skolenes landsforbund) is calling for a shift to state-funded school financing. Federation leader Jon Oddvar Holthe argues that school quality should not depend on a student's postal code. He suggests that moving financial responsibility from municipalities and counties to the state would prevent budget cuts driven by local economic pressures and ensure that the long-term socioeconomic benefits of improved education are realized.
