Norway electric scooter users face high injury rates

A new survey conducted by Respons Analyse for the insurance company Fremtind reveals high injury rates among electric scooter users in Norway. Approximately 41 percent of users who have utilized an electric scooter in the past year reported falling or sustaining injuries.

Younger demographics are disproportionately affected, with 55 percent of users under the age of 35 reporting injuries, compared to 21 percent of those aged 35 to 49 and 9 percent of those aged 50 to 64. Men reported higher injury rates at 46 percent compared to 32 percent for women.

Data from the National Trauma Registry indicates a 35 percent increase in serious electric scooter accidents between 2024 and 2025. Notably, over half of the trauma patients resulting from these accidents suffered head injuries, a significantly higher proportion than motorcycle trauma patients, where head injuries account for only 15 percent of cases.

Additionally, the study highlights a lack of awareness regarding legal requirements, noting that 30 percent of respondents are unaware that mandatory liability insurance for private electric scooters and small electric vehicles has been required since 2023.
