Norway faces energy dilemma regarding data centers and power supply

Debates in Norway are intensifying over the efficiency of data centers and the country's ability to meet rising electricity demands. Critics argue that data centers suffer from poor energy utilization, comparing them to inefficient panel heaters because high-value electrical energy is largely degraded into heat, requiring additional power for cooling.

As the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) predicts a significant increase in electricity consumption toward 2035—driven by electrification, new industry, and data centers—questions remain regarding power sources. Potential solutions such as wind, solar, expanded hydropower, nuclear energy, and increased imports face various forms of local and political resistance. Furthermore, the infrastructure required to transport this energy, including new power lines and cables, continues to encounter opposition from landowners and local communities.
