Norway faces labor shortages and postal service cuts

Norway is confronting significant logistical and labor challenges according to recent proposals and warnings from industry groups. The Norwegian Police Federation has warned that the country may face a shortage of labor before it runs out of money, noting that the proposed 2027 state budget could lead to staff reductions in police districts. To mitigate this, the federation suggests a better division of tasks between the police and the private security industry, which employs over 10,000 guards. They propose that approved security firms take over duties such as guarding, prisoner transport, and certain traffic incidents to free up at least 550 police positions for investigation and emergency response.

Simultaneously, the Norwegian government plans to reduce the postal budget by approximately 50 million NOK, a 24 percent cut. This includes reducing letter delivery from 2.5 days a week to just one day a week starting next summer. SMB Norge has warned that these changes could increase costs and administrative burdens for small businesses, potentially undermining their competitiveness. Small business owners have reported difficulties accessing basic services, such as purchasing stamps or finding accessible post offices, as the service model shifts.
