Norway faces protest over Arctic oil and gas exploration expansion
The European Grandparents for Climate (EGC) organization has unanimously decided to write to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to protest the expansion of oil and gas exploration in the Arctic. During their annual meeting in The Hague, the group expressed deep concern regarding Norway’s decision to enlarge petroleum licensing areas in the Barents Sea, despite calls from the European Union for an international moratorium on new Arctic fossil fuel development.
The EGC, a non-partisan network launched in Brussels in 2023, aims to leverage the political influence of older generations to ensure adherence to the Paris Agreement and the EU Green Deal. The group argues that energy security should be built on renewable energy and efficient transitions rather than prolonging dependence on fossil fuels in vulnerable regions.
While some reports suggest a formal EU ban on Arctic oil and gas is being treated as fact, it is noted that such a moratorium has not been negotiated or legally adopted by the Commission, though the call for one remains a significant point of political tension.
