Norway faces rising household debt and tax arrears

Norway is experiencing a notable rise in household debt and financial anxiety. Experts report a trend where established professionals, including teachers and nurses with stable incomes and homeownership, are increasingly seeking to consolidate debt. This surge is attributed to increased spending during the summer, including holiday and World Cup-related expenses.

Credit card debt in Norway reached 78.3 billion NOK by the end of July. A survey by Norstat for Frende Forsikring indicates that one-third of Norwegians are concerned about their personal finances, with 15 percent having intentionally delayed bill payments in the past year.

Compounding these issues, the Norwegian Tax Administration (Skatteetaten) reports that citizens owe 40 billion NOK in unpaid taxes. Failure to meet tax deadlines can result in high interest rates, wage garnishment, or the seizure of assets such as vehicles and homes.
