Norway faces rising online shopping fraud and competition from Chinese platforms

A new survey conducted for Telenor reveals that one in four Norwegians report having been victims of online shopping fraud. Additionally, four out of ten respondents have experienced fraudulent attempts tailored to their specific interests. Telenor CEO Birgitte Engebretsen warns that artificial intelligence is making these scams, including fake online stores and deceptive advertisements, increasingly difficult to detect by making them more credible and personalized.

Separately, the Norwegian employers' organization Virke is raising alarms regarding the rapid growth of Chinese low-price platforms Temu and Shein. Data indicates that approximately 145,000 low-priced Chinese goods arrive in Norwegian homes daily, with over 1.1 million shipments from these platforms recorded in August alone.

Virke chief analyst Runar Wiksnes argues that these platforms compete on unfair terms compared to Norwegian retailers. He notes that while domestic chains like Normal, Kappahl, and Lindex support thousands of local jobs and pay significant taxes, there are no guarantees regarding product safety or consumer rights when shopping through foreign low-price platforms.
