Norway fishing industry to see CO2 tax removal by 2027

The Norwegian political landscape is seeing a shift regarding environmental taxation in the fishing sector. A proposal by the Høyre and KrF parties to remove the CO2 tax on fishing has secured a majority in the Stortinget, supported by Sp and Frp.

Proponents argue that the current tax has been counterproductive, driving Norwegian fishers to refuel in foreign countries to avoid costs, which has inadvertently increased total emissions due to longer travel distances. The plan aims to permanently remove this tax by January 1, 2027, to provide more predictable framework conditions for the coastal industry.
