Norway government scraps proposal to close northern airports
Norway's Transport Minister, Kamzy Gunaratnam, has withdrawn a controversial proposal that could have led to the closure of several airports in northern Norway. The decision follows significant political pressure regarding the state-subsidized FOT regional flight routes.
A previous study by Oslo Economics suggested potential route cuts, which threatened the viability of airports in Vardø, Mosjøen, Namsos, Stokmarknes, and Røst. The government has now clarified that current flight routes will be maintained and no airports will be closed during the upcoming tender process for the 2028–2033 period.
Minister Gunaratnam stated that regional flight routes are essential for ensuring the population has adequate travel options for work and leisure, supporting safe and sustainable living in rural districts. The government will continue to seek input on the study, with the public consultation period remaining open until December 15. The tender competition for northern Norway's FOT routes is scheduled for release in spring 2027.
