Norway health minister targets hospital reform and consultant spending

Norway's Minister of Health and Care Services, Jan Christian Vestre, has announced plans for a major healthcare reform aimed at restructuring the sector. Vestre intends for the reform to be the centerpiece of his tenure, seeking changes that he describes as the most significant in 25 years. The goal is to move away from the current health enterprise model established in the early 2000s, which critics argue is characterized by excessive bureaucracy and a democratic deficit.

In addition to structural reforms, recent data shows a decline in consultant spending within the Norwegian hospital system. For the first time in five years, expenditure on consultants fell below 1 billion NOK, totaling 986 million NOK last year. This is a significant decrease from the 1.4 billion NOK spent in 2022. Vestre stated that approximately 500 million NOK has been redirected from administration and bureaucracy toward patient-centered health services.
