Norway housing policy: SV calls for inheritance law reform

The Socialist Left Party (SV) is calling for reforms to inheritance laws and housing policies to address the issue of vacant and decaying properties in Norway, particularly in rural districts. In Northern Norway, many homes and areas remain unused due to properties being stuck in unresolved estates.

Key challenges include disagreements among multiple heirs, a lack of interest in taking over properties, or selling costs exceeding property value. Currently, there is no general legal deadline for settling estates, except for certain agricultural and forestry lands. Additionally, properties with numerous fractional owners across generations make it increasingly difficult to reach consensus on use, sale, or development.
