Norway implements new winter tire requirements

Starting November 1, new tire regulations will take effect for motorists in Southern and Central Norway. Passenger cars must have a minimum tread depth of three millimeters to meet winter requirements, an increase from the 1.6 millimeter minimum required during the summer period.

Authorities emphasize that road conditions take precedence over the calendar date. Drivers are responsible for ensuring their vehicles have sufficient grip at all times; if snow or ice appears before November, vehicles must be equipped with appropriate tires. In Northern Norway, including Nordland, Troms, and Finnmark, the studded tire period began on October 16 and lasts until April 30.

Experts advise that meeting the minimum tread depth does not guarantee safety, as tire rubber can harden and lose effectiveness with age. Drivers are encouraged to inspect tread, damage, and overall condition before mounting wheels. The same tread depth requirements apply to trailers.
