Norway implements school reforms to address declining science and technology competence

Norway is facing challenges regarding declining educational results, particularly in science and technology. Despite various strategies implemented over the last two decades, there is a growing concern regarding the country's future competence in these critical sectors.

In response to these trends, the Norwegian government is introducing reforms aimed at increasing learning outcomes. Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun has emphasized that the new approach focuses on three main areas: strengthening core skills like reading, writing, and arithmetic in early years; ensuring a stable learning environment; and incorporating more play and physical activity for younger students to improve concentration and well-being.

These changes come amid debates over curriculum structure, including proposals from the Directorate for Education and Training to adjust how subjects are organized in the earliest grades. The business sector has also expressed concerns that a lack of technological and scientific expertise could impact Norway's future value creation and competitiveness.
