Norway launches new equality strategy for people with disabilities
The Norwegian government has launched a new strategy aimed at improving equality for people with disabilities. Introduced by Minister of Culture and Equality Lubna Jaffery, the plan focuses on four key areas: democracy and participation, security and protection against discrimination, improved support mechanisms, and the development of a universally designed society.
The strategy seeks to anchor disability policy in human rights, noting that the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) has been incorporated into Norwegian human rights law. The government intends to conduct a survey to assess societal attitudes toward disability to better identify areas requiring intervention against prejudice and harassment.
While the strategy has been welcomed by organizations like Uloba for its focus on civil rights rather than just healthcare, critics note that the plan does not include additional funding. Advocates emphasize that for the strategy to succeed, it must translate into concrete measures that ensure real autonomy and participation in work, education, and social life.
