Electric vehicle costs and adoption trends show Norway leading globally

A global study by Arthur D. Little ranks Norway as the most cost-effective country for electric vehicle (EV) ownership, scoring 32.2 points due to significant tax advantages and high fuel costs for combustion engines. Singapore (27.6) and France (26.8) follow, while Germany ranks eighth with 23.7 points.

In the European Union, EV adoption is rising. In 2025, pure electric vehicles accounted for 17.3 percent of all new car registrations, a significant increase from 0.4 percent in 2015. While Germany registered nearly one-third of all new EU electric cars in 2025, it trails leaders like Denmark (67.8 percent) and the Netherlands (40.2 percent) in terms of market share.

User sentiment remains high; an ADAC survey indicates that 97 percent of EV owners are satisfied with their vehicles, and over 90 percent intend to remain with electric propulsion for their next purchase. However, challenges persist regarding public charging infrastructure, high costs, and reduced driving range during winter months.
