Norway: Local knowledge and impact assessments vital for municipal planning

Research from the University of Bergen indicates that valuable local knowledge regarding nature and climate is frequently excluded from municipal planning processes. A study involving 75 interviews in Northern Norway suggests that while residents, fishers, farmers, and reindeer herders possess critical observations on flood paths, erosion, and vegetation changes, this information is often not integrated into formal decision-making frameworks.

In the Innlandet region of Norway, local politicians are calling for a mandatory duty to map the benefits and drawbacks of wind power projects before making decisions. A survey shows that eight out of ten municipal council representatives believe municipalities should be required to conduct impact assessments before approving or rejecting wind power developments. While many politicians wish to retain the right to veto projects, they argue that decisions must be based on factual consequences rather than principles alone to ensure effective local democracy and economic planning.
