King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89. According to the Norwegian Palace, the King passed away peacefully at Rikshospitalet on Friday, August 28, at 06:35 following a period of illness.

Upon the announcement of his death, his son, Haakon, immediately succeeded him as the new King of Norway. King Haakon informed Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of the transition, marking the beginning of a new era for the nation. In mourning, the Norwegian flag has been flown at half-mast across the country.

The passing comes just one day before what would have been the 58th wedding anniversary of King Harald and Queen Sonja, who married in 1968 at Oslo Cathedral. The royal family has received widespread condolences from international leaders and royal houses, including those of Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain.
