Norway’s celebrated rower Olaf Tufte died of acute heart failure on 21 July 2026 at the age of 50. He was found unconscious on his farm in Nykirke, was rushed to Rikshospitalet and could not be revived.
A funeral was held on 31 July 2026 at Horten Church. Around 150 rowers, fellow athletes and musicians attended, including performances by Bjarne Brøndbo, DDE and singer‑actress Jannicke Kruse. Birgit Skarstein and other members of the rowing community spoke of the "large hole" his loss leaves.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called Tufte "one of Norway’s foremost sports heroes" and culture minister Lubna Jaffery praised his inspirational impact. Tufte, a two‑time Olympic gold‑medalist who competed in seven Games from 1996 to 2021, is survived by his wife Aina and their two children.
