Norway navigates energy policy and data center skepticism

Norway faces complex energy and infrastructure challenges as the nation balances industrial growth with public sentiment. Energy Minister Terje Aasland stated at ONS that Norway will continue drilling in the Arctic regardless of EU positions, dismissing the concept of Europe as a ‘green battery’ as a failed idea.

In the technology sector, a survey by Respons Analyse for Schneider Electric reveals significant public skepticism regarding data centers. While the industry is growing rapidly—with more than one new data center joining Statnett’s capacity queue weekly—only 25 percent of Norwegians believe the country should invest in the sector. Furthermore, only 16 percent believe these facilities create real local value, with skepticism being highest in rural areas where many plants are located.

Despite this, there is strong support for data sovereignty; 77 percent of respondents believe it is important that Norwegian data is stored and processed within Norwegian data centers.

In broader energy news, European gas prices exceeded 70 euros per megawatt-hour due to low storage levels and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Locally, NVE has introduced a new reporting requirement for hydropower producers in Mid-Norway to monitor low reservoir levels.
