Norway enters mourning as King Haakon VIII ascends the throne
Norway has entered a period of official court mourning following the death of King Harald V at the age of 89. The King passed away at Oslo University Hospital while receiving treatment for haemolytic anaemia.
King Haakon VIII, who ascended the throne upon his father's death, has sworn an oath to the country's constitution. The Norwegian palace has announced that most royal activities will be cancelled until October 9, though constitutional obligations such as meetings of the council of state will continue.
King Harald V is currently lying in state at the Royal Palace chapel, where thousands of people have gathered to pay their respects. His funeral is scheduled for September 9 at Oslo Cathedral, after which he will be interred at the royal mausoleum in Akershus Fortress.
