Norway offshore wind research shows impact on marine species

Research conducted in Norway regarding offshore floating structures, such as wind farms, indicates that these installations may impact local marine species in deeper waters. A study testing 179 saithe, tusk, and ling around offshore structures found that ling caught at the Hywind Tampen site were in significantly poorer condition compared to those at comparison sites.

As coastal regions face rising electricity demands and land scarcity, offshore energy infrastructure is expanding into the deep sea. While fixed-bottom wind turbines are limited to depths under 200 feet, floating installations are being deployed to capture high-capacity wind in deeper waters to meet global decarbonization goals.
