Norway political debate intensifies over data center power consumption
Norwegian political parties are engaged in a heated debate regarding the regulation of data centers and their impact on the national power grid. Data centers currently account for nearly 58 percent of the power consumption queue.
Sylvi Listhaug of the Progress Party (Frp) has proposed a new policy to replace the current ‘first-come, first-served’ principle with stricter requirements, including mandates for data centers to invest in power production. However, this approach has drawn criticism from other political factions. Dag-Inge Ulstein of the Christian Democratic Party (KrF) described the proposal as ‘cowardly,’ arguing for a temporary freeze on all new developments until control is established.
The Red Party (Rødt) has also called for a halt to power and grid allocations for new data center projects until a national regulatory framework is in place. They suggest that projects with a capacity of 25MW or more should be subject to parliamentary oversight, similar to the petroleum industry, to ensure considerations for nature, climate, and critical infrastructure are met.
