Norway prepares legislation to criminalize trade with Israeli settlements

Norway is preparing legislation to criminalize commercial activity with Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria. The proposed law, currently under public consultation, would prohibit Norwegian citizens and businesses from importing goods from these areas or exporting goods to them. The restrictions extend beyond simple trade to include real estate purchases, certain construction and property services, and investments in businesses operating within these communities.

Violators could face fines or imprisonment for up to three years, while negligent violations could result in sentences of up to six months. Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stated that the measure is expected to advance, noting that the deteriorating situation in the West Bank has strengthened the government’s position. Eide also remarked that the bill aligns with actions taken by several other nations.

Norway joins a group of 12 countries—including Canada, Denmark, France, and the United Kingdom—that have expressed intentions to impose national restrictions on trade involving goods from Israeli settlements. These nations have collectively stated that Israeli government actions in the West Bank damage the possibility of a two-state solution.
