Norway proposes social media and gaming ban for children under 16

The Norwegian government has announced plans to introduce a ban on social media use for children under the age of 16. The proposed legislation, which is expected to be submitted to parliament by the end of the year, will also target "harmful" online gaming and messaging services.

Minister for Children and Families Lene Vågslid stated that the bill aims to protect minors from harmful content, addictive features, illegal marketing, and unwanted contact from strangers. The government defines harmful platforms as those whose design, features, or content pose risks to a child's emotional, cognitive, or physical development and safety.

Specific platforms named as likely to be covered by the law in their current forms include TikTok, Roblox, and Snapchat. YouTube may also be subject to the age restriction. Under the proposed rules, the age limit would apply until January 1 of the year a child turns 16. Technology companies will be held responsible for implementing effective age verification systems that comply with European data protection standards.
