Norway proposes 2027 budget with increased military spending

The Norwegian government has proposed a 2027 national budget that prioritizes military defense and armament. The proposal allocates approximately 191.7 billion NOK to the military, including support for Ukraine, with significant investments directed toward Brigade Nord, the Finnmark Brigade, and rocket artillery. Specific allocations include 1.7 billion NOK for air defense systems in Trøndelag, Nordland, and Troms, and 100 million NOK for upgrading Bell helicopters for special forces.

Critics argue the budget shifts focus away from civil society and international peace efforts. Proposed cuts include 130 million NOK from peace, security, and global cooperation initiatives, as well as 706 million NOK from UN bodies focused on women’s rights and equality. Additionally, 200 million NOK will be cut from UN development work (UNDP and UNICEF). Local leaders in northern Norway have also expressed concern, arguing that the budget fails to adequately address regional needs such as transport, housing, and health services necessary to maintain local readiness in strategic areas.
