Norway proposes prison sentences for West Bank trade violations

Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has introduced a legislative proposal that could impose prison sentences or fines on individuals and companies engaging in commercial dealings with Israeli communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Under the proposed measure, deliberate violations could result in up to three years in prison, while unintentional or negligent violations could lead to up to six months of imprisonment or fines.

The bill aims to ban imports from and exports to these specific areas, while also placing restrictions on real estate transactions, construction, engineering, and investments involving companies operating in those communities. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide stated that the move follows criticisms of Israel regarding international law, noting that the government seeks to address these issues despite accusations of antisemitism.

Israeli officials have strongly condemned the proposal. Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, described the move as “political grandstanding” and “obsessive and openly hostile policy toward Israel.” The Israeli Foreign Ministry similarly characterized the proposal as an example of “anti-Israel activism.” The legislation is currently undergoing a public consultation process, with comments due by September 19.
