Norway proposes significant cuts to NAV parental support
The Norwegian government has proposed a significant reduction in the NAV lump-sum grant (engangsstønad) intended for new parents. The proposal suggests cutting the grant from the current 92,648 NOK to 67,100 NOK, a reduction of approximately 25,548 NOK or nearly 28 percent.
Minister of Children and Families Lene Vågslid defended the decision, stating that the current amount exceeds what is necessary to cover equipment for a child’s first year. The government also expressed a desire to encourage more people to enter the workforce to qualify for standard parental benefits.
The cuts are expected to impact thousands of recipients, including students, individuals without employment income, and some people on disability benefits. The Norwegian Student Organization (NSO) has criticized the move, noting that students often lack the financial reserves to manage the costs of having a child while studying.
