Norway proposes social media ban for children under 16
The Norwegian government has announced plans to propose legislation that would prohibit children under the age of 16 from using social media. The proposed law, expected to be submitted to Parliament by the end of 2026, aims to increase the responsibility of technology companies regarding age verification, shifting the burden away from sole parental supervision.
Minister for Children and Families Lene Vågslid stated that the measures address risks including exposure to harmful content, addictive algorithms, illegal advertising, and unwanted contact with strangers. Beyond social media bans, the government is considering restrictions on AI-powered smart glasses with cameras and strengthening privacy protections for minors.
In North Macedonia, discussions regarding similar protections are ongoing. While there are currently no plans for a total ban, experts like psychologist Ana Markoska from the Zenit Association emphasize the need for systemic prevention, digital literacy, and education for parents and professionals to combat risks such as viral dangerous trends and online violence.
