Norway proposes temporary ban on AI smart glasses in public spaces

The Norwegian government has announced plans to propose a temporary ban on the use of AI-powered smart glasses in specific public and sensitive locations. The move aims to address privacy concerns regarding the potential for individuals to be photographed, filmed, or audio-recorded without their consent.

Proposed restricted areas include public gathering spaces such as parks, beaches, museums, shopping centers, and public events. The ban may also extend to locations where privacy is paramount or children are present, including schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, healthcare facilities, swimming pools, and gyms with changing rooms.

Digitalization and Public Governance Minister Torgeir Micaelsen stated, “We do not want a society where people worry about being recorded without their knowledge, photographed or filmed in places and situations in which they are accustomed to not being monitored.”

The government clarified that this is not a total ban on the technology. Private use and use in settings where there is no risk of recording others without consent will remain permitted. Additionally, the government is considering exemptions for vulnerable groups to allow for “socially beneficial uses” of the devices. A bill will be presented to the Storting as soon as possible, and an expert group will be tasked with developing permanent national regulations.
