Norway proposes temporary ban on smart glasses in public spaces

The Norwegian government has announced plans to propose a temporary ban on the use of smart glasses equipped with cameras and AI in specific public locations. Digitalization Minister Torgeir Micaelsen expressed concerns regarding the potential for unauthorized photography, video recording, and audio capture, noting that such technology could undermine social trust and cause people to withdraw from public life.

The proposed restrictions would target areas where privacy is highly sensitive, including schools, kindergartens, parks, beaches, shopping centers, and medical facilities, as well as gyms with changing rooms or showers. The government clarified that this is not a total ban on the sale or private use of the devices, but rather a measure to ensure people are not recorded without their consent.

A specialized expert group will be established to investigate the challenges posed by wearable technology and advise the government on permanent regulations. This move follows similar restrictions on camera-equipped devices in courtrooms and certain public venues in other countries.
