Norway proposes temporary ban on AI smart glasses in public spaces
The Norwegian government is proposing a temporary ban on the use of AI-powered smart glasses in specific public locations to protect privacy. Digitalization and Management Minister Torgeir Micaelsen expressed concerns regarding the risk of individuals being photographed, filmed, or recorded without their knowledge.
The proposed restrictions target several categories of locations, including parks, beaches, museums, shopping centers, and amusement parks. Additionally, the ban would cover areas involving children, such as schools, kindergartens, and playgrounds, as well as health and fitness facilities with changing rooms and showers. Higher education institutions may also be included.
This legislative move is intended to remain in place until an expert group can provide recommendations for permanent regulations regarding wearable AI technology. While the ban would not be a total prohibition—allowing private use where consent is maintained—it aims to prevent a society where citizens feel constantly monitored. Similar restrictions have already been implemented locally in Oslo schools and at Equinor facilities.
